The god’s of indie rock returned and did not disappoint. “Breaking Down” ranks as amongst their best songs ever, and getting to see “FOH” live was a great moment of the year.

This punk rock band from Chicago are going to be serious business in 2014. This 9 track mini album has been my most played release of the year.
03. Nice Hooves - Nice Hooves
One of the most balls out rocking records of the year. Only discovered it in the last month but it floated straight to the top of the pile and has been on daily rotation since.
04. All Pigs Must Die - Nothing Violates This Nature
When I am caught in the right space, this brutal record is the MUST listen.
05. Overseas – Overseas
Bazan, Johnson and two Kadane brothers. It is as good as you would expect. Some of Bazan’s finest songwriting to date.
06. White Denim - Corsicana Lemonade
Watching them play this record at the village underground last month was incredible. Did not know that you could be THIS good and have THIS much fun.
07. Kvelertak – Meir
I was late to the party on this band but have made up for lost time. A consistent listen throughout the year.
08. Raffi – The entire catalogue
I discovered 15month old little boys REALLY like bananaphones.
09. Midlake – Antiphon
Even without Tim, this band delivered. Very proggy, very masterful.
10. Lifted Bells - Lifted Bells
Caught me by surprise. Best thing Bob Nanna has done since Braid’s “Frame and Canvas” very excited to hear a full length.

02. the discovery of Kristian Harting
I had the guy on place 8 in my 2012 list and he managed to climb even higher. Seriously, it might be shameless self-promotion as we're putting out his album in early 2014, but I'm not asking for forgiveness. If any music at all accompanied me through the whole 2013 it was his. I just can't get enough of his tunes and his songs don't wear out at all. I'm a fan. And I care.

03. Searching For Sugar Man
The movie. The music. I've known the story and the music for a while before but the movie kinda did set the brackets around it for me. You know, movies...usually you watch them once and that's it. Seen it, crossed off the list. I tried to *get* the urge for owning a DVD for other than collector's or private library reasons for very long (sure, I got Easy Rider and Star Trek and all that, but...you know) - with this DVD it finally clicked (even though I got it as a present). It's a movie I could watch ever and ever again and be sucked in, feeling all sentimental and shit. I might have watched Chronicles Of Riddick as many times as Searching For Sugar Man, maybe more often but for other reasons....I guess you get the point

04. The Mountains
All and each one of them. I climb them up in the summer and ski downhill in the winter. No year could be complete without at least two trips to the mountains. It's ritualistic, it's life-saving. It's what I need to calm down, feel myself and get back in joy to what I love doing.

05. Jerusalem In My Heart - Mo7it Al-Mo7it 8 (Constellation Records)
When I saw him playing live in Leipzig in 2012 on the Constellation Festival it totally blew my mind. Expectations for the announced album were ridiculously high and he even managed to top them. So out of this world that it hurts and makes you jump for joy at the same time. Soundscapes crossed by Arabic chants, psychedelic in some way but also with a meaning. It's a bit of a miracle that something like this even exists.

06. Goat @ Roadburn Festival
The seed was planted with the amazing album they released in 2012 but live it was not from this earth. I would trust every hippie who brings me such a mother of all shows.

07. Master Musicians Of Bukkake - Far West
I mean, seriously, how can a band bend the limits to all that is music and attitude THAT far? The live experience needs to be lumped in here as you need to visualize them while listening to their records. 08. Die Kreuzen on Roadburn Festival
A worship to the past! Sure, both performances they delivered were stellar, but what made it so outstanding were the hipsters and metal freaks totally not getting why old farts like me freaked out about them. Call me nostalgic and you are damn right. In this special case. Me usually being the first one who runs away screeching when a reunion of one of our old heroes is announced but here it was the right moment at the right time - they totally still had *it* - it was pure and real.

09. Corrections House - Last City Zero (Neurot Recordings)
Massive, cold, harsh. When the dirty, filthy autumn creeped in it was soundtracked by this album, which did hit my player at the perfect time. There is no warmth in it. The aesthetics, the sound, the attitude - a classic already. For the grey days. And there is a few in each one's life, right?
