HUNTERESS
DESTRUCTUON HORIZON (BRAWL RECORDS)
Destruction Horizon is the 2nd album from UK musician Laura Cannell under the alias Hunteress. The ten tracks feature Cannell's vocals, electronics & instruments digging deep into ideas of folklore, history, plant-lore, and her own freeform semi-improvised songwriting to create 'Synth-pop Moonlit Torch-songs'.
The title is inspired by the name of the layer of earth containing burnt artefacts, ash and soot that archaeologists refer to as the Destruction Horizon which 'denotes a past catastrophic event', in this case the layer left by the revolt in AD 60 led by Boudicca, Queen of the East Anglian Iceni Tribe.
Moving away from the solo & minimalist music that has featured on Laura's previous work, here she steps into a parallel universe of Hunteress embracing electronics, voice and the ancient sound of the crumhorn to bare herself musically in a new way.
It is not sugar coated, or neat, but a woman, strong, determined and surrounded by emotions, ideas, solitude and a feral landscape in a complicated time.
In 2020, Boomkat invited composer/performer Laura Cannell to be part of their Documenting Sound Series.
They asked for music that she was currently working on during the first UK lockdown. At that moment Cannell was approaching ideas away from her acoustic instruments and her experimental early music and gave them an honest musical answer.
She was working on music in a way she never had before, solely computer and vocal based.
A completely new emotional and musical space was forming and here is where she made her debut appearance as Hunteress.
Recording as Hunteress marks a turning point for Laura, a cue to conjure a mix of "spellbinding synth dervishes and achingly raw, crepuscular hymns"
