Bonny Light Horseman ist eine neue Indie-Folk-Supergroup, die aus Anaïs Mitchell (Gesang), dem Fruit Bats-Mastermind Eric Johnson sowie dem Produzenten und Multiinstrumentalisten Josh Kaufman (bekannt für seine Arbeit mit u.a.

The War On Drugs und The National) besteht. Die Band debütierte 2019 beim Newport Folk Festival und stellte ihre gleichnamige Debütsingle mit Aaron Dessner von The National an der Gitarre bereits letzten Juli vor.

Das Trio veröffentlicht sein Debütalbum bei 37d03d Records (lies: People Records), einem neuen Label von Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) und den Dessner-Brüdern.

Diese luden die Musiker im Sommer 2018 in die deutsche Hauptstadt ein, um dort an einer einwöchigen Künstlerresidenz im Berliner Funkhaus teilzunehmen.

Dort sind laut Band 60 Prozent des Albums entstanden (die restlichen Aufnahmen fanden im Januar 2019 in den Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, NY statt).

Ziel des Projekts Bonny Light Horseman ist es traditionelle Volkslieder von den britischen Inseln neu zu interpretieren.

Nachhören lässt sich das zum Beispiel auf der hervorragenden zweiten Single, ,Deep In Love", die laut Band als Fruit Bats-Skizze begann "until Kaufman recognized its uncanny (and unplanned) similarity to a traditional tune by that name (it shares some lyrics with aly Waly' / he Water Is Wide').

It was under the banner of those eternal connections that the trio of Bonny Light Horseman came together.

From festival fields and a German art hub to a snowy upstate studio and everywhere in between, the astral folk outfit _ comprised of Anaïs Mitchel l , Eric D.

Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins), and Josh Kaufman (The National, Bob Weir)_is mixing the ancient, mystical medium of transatlantic traditional folk music with a contemporary, collective brush.

The resulting album, Bonny Light Horseman, is an elusive kind of sonic event: a bottled blend of lightning and synergy that will excite fans of multiple genres, eras, and ages.

The album features fellow 37d03d artists-in-residence Michael Lewis (bass, saxophone) and JT Bates (drums) as well as Justin Vernon, Aaron Dessner, Kate Stables, Lisa Hannigan, The Staves, Christian Lee Hutson, and more.

Leaving the 2018 37d03d Berlin event with roughly 60-percent of a record, the band reconvened at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, NY, in January 2019 to finish, bringing Lewis and Bates as well as engineer Bel la Blasko along with them.
