Mit ihrem dritten Album als HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS, "Medicine Country", welches Ende 2009 das Licht der Welt in einem Bauernhaus in Athens, Georgia, erblickte.

Fragt man Holly nach ihrem Album, so behauptet sie frank und frei, dass das neue Werk "mehr Schwung" als seine Vorgänger habe.

Und tatsächlich: Es gibt auf dem ganzen Longplayer nur einen "langsamen" Song. Das mag darauf zurückzuführen sein, dass die beiden Vollblutmusiker dieses Mal genug Zeit hatten, an den Songs zu arbeiten und sie aufzunehmen, während ihr letztes Album zwischen Tür und Angel auf Europatour in weniger als zwei Wochen in Spanien aufgenommen wurde.

"Mehr Schwung" also. Und was noch? Holly sagt es uns: Geisterhafter Blues, jede Menge Slidegitarre und einen ordentlichen Schuss des guten alten Country.

Dies sei genau die Platte, die den Geist der verdrehten alten Amerikas heraufbeschwöre.

Und was sagen wir? Wir finden, dass jeder, der an der Musik von THE BAND, SON HOUSE oder HANK WILLIAMS, gesungen von NANCY SINATRA und LEE HAZLEWOOD auch nur entfernt Gefallen findet, hier seine Ohren mit dem Schraubstock öffnen sollte.

Ach ja, nicht unerwähnt wollen wir lassen, dass das Cover von Hollys Mutter entworfen wurde.

Was den warmen, selbstgemachten Eindruck des Albums nur verstärkt. Wer jetzt an Apfelstrudel mit Sahne denkt, liegt im Trend durchaus richtig.

Zwölf brandneue Songs, die klingen wie Apfelstrudel, der in eine Saloonschlägerei gerät, mit einer Coverversion von RECKLESS ERICs "Murder In My Mind" und einem Gastauftritt von TOM HEINL auf "Blood On The Saddle" (Tom schrieb seinerzeit Hollys Weihnachtssong "Christmas Tree On Fire").

Holly and Lawyer Dave are back with their third album together as Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs.

'Medicine County' was written and recorded on a farmhouse just outside Athens in Georgia and as Holly says it's "peppier" than the last album, in fact there's only one slow song on the whole album which is probably down to the fact that this time they had a lot longer to work on the songs and recording, their last album was recorded in the middle of a very long European tour over a week or two in Spain.

So what does it sound like? Choc-full of ghostly blues, gut-bucket slide guitar, with a smattering of ol' time country.

This is just the disc for conjuring up the spirit of weird old America. Anyone with an interest or liking for the music of The Band, Son House, or Hank Williams, sung by Nancy and Lee, should certainly check it out! Holly's mum painted the cover, which adds to the warm home-spun appeal.
