DEVONNS, THE
TELL ME / TELL ME (INSTRUMENTAL) (RECORD KICKS)
The Devonns, a new soul outfit from Chicago, are set to revive the golden age of Chicago Soul with their self-titled debut album, releasing on April 6.
The first single, "Tell Me," will be available on March 6 as a limited edition 45 and digitally.
Drawing inspiration from classic soul bands like The Dramatics, The Isley Brothers, and Leroy Hutson, the band blends traditional sounds with modern influences from artists such as Jamie Lidell and Raphael Saadiq.Founded in 2016 by multi-instrumentalist Mathew Ajjarapu after he left medical school, The Devonns feature skilled musicians Khalyle Hagood (bass), Ari Lindo (guitar), and Khori Wilson (drums).
Initially aiming for a 50s doo-wop sound, the band quickly shifted towards a 70s soul vibe during their early rehearsals, exemplified in tracks like "Tell Me."The album's recording took nearly two years, driven by Mat's perfectionist vision and aided by engineer Mike Hagler and arranger Paul Von Mertens.
The result is a nostalgic yet contemporary collection characterized by rich arrangements and catchy melodies, capturing the essence of 70s soul while showcasing The Devonns' unique style.
