Gifted and versatile songwriter, producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Dan Hartman mastered a wide range of styles, including classic rock (Edgar Winter Group's "Free Ride," written and sung by Hartman), groundbreaking dance classics ("Relight My Fire" and "Instant Replay" as a solo artist, Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation" as writer/producer), anthemic '80s pop ("I Can Dream About You" under his own name; Tina Turner's "Simply The Best" as producer), funky R&B (James Brown's comeback hit "Living In America," produced and co-written by Hartman), and even ambient new age music (1989's New Green Clear Blue solo album), to cite just a few highlights from Hartman's staggering output of more than 250 compositions and appearances on over 100 albums during his tragically short lifetime.
Dan Hartman's restless artistry took yet another twist with 1981's It Hurts To Be In Love, which plays as a tribute to classic Brill Building songwriting sensibilities while doubling as a concept album on unrequited love.
The album alternates lovelorn ballads with more upbeat and quirkier tracks, each filled with sumptuous melodies and Hartman's emotionally expressive vocals and lyrics.
"This music is closer to me because it has more romantic sensitivity than I've allowed myself to show in past productions.
I'm really pouring it all out," Hartman commented at the time of It Hurts To Be In Love's release.
"I guess you could say there's more Dan Hartman in there than any other record I've done."
