KOENIX
EILAND (HICKTOWN RECORDS)
Fans had to wait five years for the fifth studio album of Koenix. The development the band has gone through since then can be heard on the latest release: the sound has become more modern - and still remains unmistakable.
On "Eiland" the four Swiss musicians combine influences from folk rock, ska punk and folktronica to a unique sound.
The twelve tracks offer a well-rounded mix of catchy songs and hypnotic dance numbers. Especially the use of exotic instruments makes the album a unique listening experience.
There are Irish bagpipes next to an Indian sitar, and the Swiss dulcimer supports shawms, flutes and the hurdy-gurdy.
The new drummer Philipp Eichenberger turns out to be a real win. His rhythmic foundation shows repeatedly that his roots are in the metal genre.
The lyrics by songwriter and lead singer Jonas Martin Schneider invite you to leave external constraints or inner demons behind.
The titular "Eiland" serves as a projection for a place of longing, a space where anything is possible.
The band gained its popularity mainly at medieval festivals in various European countries, but the album definitely has the potential to attract new listeners outside the scene.
