LEHMANN, WOLF
LUCID LIVING (LTD PINK COL. LP) (SILUH RECORDS)
Viennese musician and producer Wolfgang Möstl presents his debut album under his new alter ego WOLF LEHMANN.
The tracks, which were mostly created from sampled loops, result in a well-balanced album between TripHop, Vaporwave & Ambient.
His latest project under the name Wolf Lehmann (the artist's real surname) joins a long list as a musician (including with Mile Me Deaf, Killed By 9V Batteries, Sex Jams, Melt Downer).
As a vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist and drummer, Möstl is universally applicable - but also as a producer in the studio, Möstl is a much sought-after man who in recent years has worked with Voodoo Jürgens, Culk, Dives, Clara Luzia, Zinn, Vague, Earl Mobley and Nino aus Wien, among others missed the right studio sound.
Once coming from the edgy guitar (Mile Me Deaf named a song by the American noise rockers "Unwound") Möstl has recently been increasingly turning to electronic instruments.
Now you can clearly hear the desire for electronic experimentation in the studio, but the tracks seem organic and solidly grounded.
Floating and mildly psychedelic, the result is sluggish grooves, sometimes almost LoFi trip-hop.
The timbres are extremely colorful, thanks to the alienated sitar, oud and Bollywood strings sometimes seem exotic.
Various instruments mix, sometimes unobtrusive girl vocals (Viktoriaglobal Kirner and Tamara Leichtfrieda from Dives), spacey Fender Rhodes piano, laidback-funky guitar licks, dub echoes, relaxed clapping percussion, everything is brought into a sluggish flow, leisurely, bassy, pulsating and yet irresistibly hypnotic.
Ultimately, trace elements from a wide variety of genres converge here: psychedelic soul, exotic, herb - mostly gently abstracted, emphasized streaky and fuzzy staged, strangely otherworldly in effect and sound aesthetically clearly pre-digital.
And again and again the elastic bass ensures latent funkiness. Daring music that doesn't fit into any common genre box - is that post-modern drug music? In any case, there is plenty of addiction potential.
